Steve notes that that there is a bit of a crest, which changes in shape over time as the bird assumes different attitudes. The white on the head is also oriented more towards rear than top. The bill and tail are longer than those of a Bufflehead, with the entire bird being a bit larger as well.

ReplyDeleteThat crest detail is especially interesting, since the shape of a Bufflehead’s head and white patch can change quite noticeably with posture. The longer bill and tail, along with the larger overall size, also seem like useful points when comparing it directly with a Bufflehead. Those structural differences could be quite important for narrowing down the bird’s identity. ally spin
